Meet CHS' new Boy's Basketball head coach

Ryan Osborn is the new CHS Boys’ Basketball Head Coach. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. That couldn’t have been more true for Ryan Osborn. A high school basketball standout, Osborn walked away from a full-ride college scholarship his senior year of high school after his good friend was killed by a drunk driver.
“I was going to Western New Mexico to play basketball and fulfill a dream,” Osborn recalls. “But left the official visit early to attend the funeral.” He simply wasn’t ready to leave the safety and comfort of the Hoosier State, so Osborn attended Butler for a semester while he coached basketball at a middle school in Brownsburg.
“It brought me back to what I loved,” Osborn says. “I experienced satisfaction in teaching basketball and working with kids. The opportunity to have an impact on their lives was exciting.” So Osborn transferred to IUPUI where he studied physical education and worked to earn a spot on the basketball team.
“That first year wasn’t easy,” Osborn recalls. “I got in touch with some coaches and players, started working out with the team and was eventually offered a walk-on spot.” After the second year, IUPUI’s Head Coach, Ron Hunter, offered Osborn a full-ride scholarship and upon graduation extended him a job offer as Director of Basketball Operations. After his stint at IUPUI, Osborn became the top assistant basketball coach at Avon before taking the assistant job at Carmel High School.
Carmel went 131-25 in Osborn’s six seasons under head coach Scott Heady. During that time, Carmel won two state championships (2012 and ’13) and four straight Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference titles. This spring, Osborn was tapped to replace Heady after Heady announced his retirement.
“I’m beyond excited,” Osborn beams. “The basketball program is in great shape, the transition has been smooth, and the kids are working their tails off. They’ve been awesome. The opportunity to coach, teach and live in a community like Carmel is special.”

A 1999 Logansport grad, Osborn credits his work ethic and stick-to-itiveness to his small town upbringing. “I come from a family of good people and really hard workers,” Osborn admits. “That’s all I know.” Osborn teaches upper level, elective PE classes, working in the weight room full time to help athletes with advanced physical conditioning. When he’s not in the gym or on the court, Osborn enjoys time with his wife, Megan, a teacher at Carmel Middle School, and his two daughters, ages seven and 12.
“I don’t think I could have scripted it better,” Osborn says. “I’m very fortunate to not just coach basketball at Carmel High School, but also to be a part of this great community. We are blessed.” As for that accident that nearly derailed his basketball career? Osborn offers this advice to students who might lose their way, “Find something you love and stick with it. Love what you do and it will never be work. I just might have the best job in the world.”
