Hubbard and Cravens

My name is Kaylee Purcell and this is Blog #1 of Wake up and Smell the Coffee. I am not a professional barista, however I drink far more coffee than anyone truly should. With so many delicious and unique places that serve coffee, it is so hard to resist.

“How do you feel when there is no coffee? Depresso”! Coffee is an essential part of my day, especially in the morning: multiply that by at least 10 on the mornings when I go work out! My problem is that I want coffee and protein in the morning, which usually means I need to pull out my skillet and Keurig to whip up coffee and eggs, but I don’t always have the extra time that takes. To be honest, I also don’t want those extra dishes…

I have found the solution to my problem!

Hubbard and Cravens offers a drink called “The Healthy Elephant”. It is a rich, creamy, bold coffee with a background note of peanut butter. It’s cold and refreshing, like a healthier version of a Frappuccino.  It’s got a good amount of protein from the peanut butter to start your day off right- especially if you don’t have time for breakfast.

If this drink doesn’t entice you yet, you can also amp up the flavors with syrups like vanilla, caramel, or hazelnut. It’s perfect to grab and go, whether you're on the way to the farmers market, gym, or work.

The good thing about coffee is there are always options! If peanut butter deliciousness doesn’t tickle your taste buds, then Hubbard and Cravens also offers pour overs, press pots, cold brews, espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, and just good ol' coffee.

Not feeling coffee but still want something to spice up your morning? They also have hot or cold chai tea. It’s light and creamy with a mild but flavorful spice. Chai is inviting and warm to my tummy, which I recommend for the breezy summer mornings. As the day heats up my drinks cool down and I would choose the iced chai, which is refreshing. Christmas in a cup all year round.

Want something carb-free? The restaurant also offers healthy egg dishes, like the Bacon, Mozzarella & Tomato frittata, which includes Smoking Goose applewood smoked bacon, fresh mozzarella, topped with shredded basil and oven-roasted tomato. It is hot and steamy - fresh out of the oven. Packed full of flavors with juicy tomatoes and gooey cheese, it makes you glad you didn’t fix those bland eggs at home.

If you are hungry and need an accompaniment to the coffee crave, I would recommend the cinnamon scone. The scone is warm and

crunchy on the outside, yet light and airy on the inside. It pairs great with any cup of coffee, is good on the go, and not heavy like a doughnut if you are going to work out.

The combination of aromas from the coffee and the breakfast goodies hits you as

you walk in the door. It instantly made my mouth water.

Wake up and smell the coffee Blog 2 - The Quirky Feather

When you think of the words “Jabberwocky” and “Dirty Hippy,” what comes to

your mind? When you google Jabberwocky, it comes up as a poem by Lewis

Carroll,  and a dirty hippy is a guy with dreads, wearing tie-dye…

I bet you’re thinking- what the heck does this have to do with coffee? Well, as

‘quirky’ as these names are, they are actually two types of Specialty Coffee

Drinks from the Quirky Feather.

The Jabberwocky is espresso with steamed milk, English toffee, and hazelnut.

It has a rich aroma of toffee - the perfect balance of sweet and nutty. Smooth

and creamy - but not thick like some lattes. It is perfect – light, and doesn’t

weigh you down. I also tried the Dark Carmel Hot Chocolate as well as the

Cookies and Cream Mocha- they are the same smooth and light

consistency. Highly recommended!

The Dirty Hippie is known by some as a Dirty Chai, which is espresso and chai latte.

This fun addition to Carmel’s caffeine trail is located at 890 E. 116th Street. For those of you who don’t know, they have extended hours, Monday-Friday, 6 a.m. to midnight, and Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m. to midnight. It’s a perfect place for a meeting, a place to study, or just a place to hang out.

They have blankets available if you get a slight chill, and book/game library shelves. The books are part of a lending library that you can take and read and then bring back if you choose, and the games are kept there to play and enjoy!

I went into their coffee shop thinking I was going to simply get a great cup of coffee, but my mind was intrigued by the many other attractions that make up this place. Not only do they have incredible sweet and new flavored coffees, but they also cater to the adult crowd by serving café delights with alcohol.

On their menu they have something called “Cure for What Ails You,” which includes brandy, honey, and your choice of tea. Another fun adult beverage is called “Very Merry Unbirthday,” which is blue curacao, Earl Grey, vanilla syrup, and whipped cream. Their variety includes drinks made from rum, whisky, vodka, tequila, and much more.

Along with these quirky drinks, they also have a case full of pastries and sweets. These sweets range from sweet to savory and include surprises like fruit and spices.  These are always changing, but a few treats on the menu include mango muffins, s’mores blondie, strawberry chocolate mousse trifle, and butterscotch cake bombs.

The mango muffin was flakey, light, and

airy with a caramelized outer edge,

contrasting the soft bright burst of

mango surprise.

Then - if you want the ooey, gooey flavor

of a s’more but don’t have time to build

a fire, I highly advise you to try the

s’more blondie. It pairs well with the

Cookies and Cream Mocha because they

both have a slightly sweet hint to them

which pairs seamlessly together.

I felt like a little kid with my sweet tooth!

All I have to say is, “Yum,” and I can’t wait

to come back and try more!
