Carmel to celebrate first week ever dedicated to roundabouts in America

The City of Carmel will celebrate National Roundabout Week September 17-21, with special events, fun and informative social media posts and a ribbon cutting celebration at Carmel’s newest roundabout – followed by a special Friday night street party with live music, eats and drinks, hosted by local businesses near the new roundabout at Carmel Drive and Old Meridian Street.

National Roundabout Week has been instituted by the Federal Highway Administration as a week-long appreciation of roundabouts as part of a national campaign to share the good news of roundabout safety, better traffic flow and the positive impact to the environment. The FHWA has launched its own special web page with information and is encouraging the use of the hashtag #RoundaboutsWeek in all social media posts.

“With more roundabouts than any other city in America, we really couldn’t let this week go by without having some fun and participating in the mission of advocating for roundabouts,” said Mayor Jim Brainard. “We love our roundabouts, but what we love even more is the fact that they save lives, they reduce serious injuries in accidents and they are better for our commuters and the quality of the air.”

Stay tuned to the City of Carmel Government Facebook Page beginning Monday for daily features and trivia. Stock up on your roundabout shirts and swag by visiting the special display at All Things Carmel. Enjoy some special “roundabout inspired” cookies at Main Street Treats and stay tuned for other special treats as they become available throughout the week.

Mark your calendars for the following special events:
